Introduction: From Gym Floors to Mountain Trails – My Midlife Trailblazing in Gilmanton, NH

For decades, my fitness routine was all about gyms and aerobics classes. That all changed when I moved to Gilmanton, NH, in 2006. With its beautiful trails and open skies, Gilmanton wasn’t just a new home; it was a fresh start at 50.

I’m Laura Lynn Morrissey, founder of SilverSavvy. After 15 years in financial services, I redirected my career to help others by building a thriving home care agency in the Boston area. Most recently, I launched SilverSavvy, a platform dedicated to keeping those of us over 60 informed and supported.

Gilmanton’s active community is full of vibrant people in their 60s, 70s, and beyond. I even have friends who successfully climbed Kilimanjaro in their 60s and 70s! Their secret? Community involvement, caring for the land, and staying as active outdoors as possible.

Research shows that spending time in nature is crucial for mental and physical health. Activities like hiking, walking, and gardening can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Just 20 minutes in nature can significantly lower stress levels. Plus, the American Psychological Association says being outdoors can boost your mood, improve your thinking, and even help you live longer.

The Blue Zones, areas where people live the longest, highlight that staying active and connected with nature is key to longevity. It turns out, nature isn’t just good for the soul; it’s essential for our well-being and long, healthy lives

My Go-To Hiking Gear for Every Trail

After years of trial and plenty of errors, I’ve dialed in my hiking kit to these seven indispensable items that ensure every hike is safe, and enjoyable:

  1. EltaMD UV Restore Tinted Face Sunscreen, SPF 40: Shielding from the sun, this mineral-based sunscreen is my clean ingredient, go-to for every day and a must for any outdoor enthusiast. Shop Sunscreen
  2. KastKing Hiwassee Polarized Sport Sunglasses: These sunglasses cut down glare and offer crucial eye protection without sacrificing style. Shop Sunglasses
  3. NATURE PIONEER Water Bottle Holder with Strap: Staying hydrated is a must on the trails. This hands-free holder means my water is always close by. Shop Water Bottle
  4. Casio G-Squad GBD-H2000 Fitness Tracker: For those who love tech, like me, this fitness tracker is a marvel, providing solar-powered tracking of everything from steps to heart rate. Shop Fitness Tracker
  5. TREKOLOGY Trekking Poles: A slip into a mud patch once taught me the value of having sturdy trekking poles for balance and support. Shop Poles
  6. Venture Pal 40L Lightweight Packable Travel Hiking Backpack Daypack: Perfect for carrying essentials without the weight, this backpack is a trekker’s best friend. Shop Backpack
  7. EINSKEY Unisex Sun Hat: Wide-brimmed, lightweight, and waterproof. I keep this stylish hat with me always – perfect for sun and rain.  Shop Hat

New to Hiking?  Don’t Make These Two Mistakes I Did

  • Keep It Light: Overpacking can weigh you down. Bring only what you need for the day.  To help myself I keep a list to make sure I brought only the essentials.
  • Break In Your Boots: This is a biggie!  Avoid turning your dream hike into a painful ordeal. I have been there.  Wear new boots on shorter walks first and break those shoes in before you go out on that long trail hike!
